 Measurements

These classic 50's black plastic vintage eyeglasses are in mint condition and ready for your prescription lenses. The frame is stamped ''46 - 20'' and the arms read ''Criss U.S.A. NYLON 6''. The plastic has a nice sheen with no cracks, crazing or discoloration and the metal decorations shine.

This is the Criss Apollo frame, still made today by Criss Optical out of Kansas. They come in all sorts of sizes, but these are 46 - 20 - 5 3/4. It's a fairly standard size, though some folks will want a 22 bridge. (See the Fitting page for more information on measuring.) Criss supplied frames to the US military and still does. Their frames are made of Nylon instead of the usual eyeglasses frame material, which is called ''Zyl'' plastic. Nylon is much, much more flexible than Zyl, which will bend to a point, but then breaks unless heated in a frame warmer. Nylon, on the other hand, can be nearly twisted into a pretzel without breaking!! It comes right back to the original shape, too! No wonder they're favorites in the military, where you don't want to worry about broken glasses! These frames are really tough stuff!

This particular frame is a testament to how consistent Criss is with their manufactuering. The Frame front is original vintage Criss, probably dating to the late 1960's, but the arms are brand new. Not only do they fit, but the they're basically identical to the old arms I found with this frame! (The old ones were really long and these are 5 3/4 inches, the standard men's temple length.) Alos check out the original pamphlet that came with the frames! It's my only one, so I'm hanging on to it, but print out a little copy and keep it your glasses case or the medicine cabinet! The hinges are nice and tight, the temples show no wear, even at the ears, and the bridge is smooth and clean. These frames are in mint condition.

Remember that temples are always measured their full length, hinge to tip, as though they were straightened out. Why? Because they're adjustable, so measurements to the bend will vary based on who wore the frame! Lens and bridge measurements are from lens edge to lens edge. Hinge to hinge is measured from screw to screw.

Two notes about the Criss Apollo frames. First, my price is outstanding! Shop around and you'll find I'm not pulling your leg. The main reason for this is that I'm not keeping a big backstock. When you order, I'll order. This means it's going to take maybe two weeks to get your frames unless I have it in stock... I do keep a few on hand. Anyway, this is the the trade-off for the nice price. If you'd like a one-week delivery time, I'm happy to arrange for that for an extra fee. Please email to make arrangements before you order.

The other note is that they come in many sizes and as the Attic gets sorted out, I'll get a complete list posted. Meantime, please do feel free to emai with size requests after taking a look at your own frames at home and at my Fitting page. They basically run from a small 42-18-130 up to a 52-24-150! I even think I have some vintage 40-20 frames around if you need something smaller than is currently made! So, feel free to write! I'm picky about condition so there are no surprises and can honestly say these glasses are in mint condition. They'll make great everyday glasses or some very cool sunglasses.
